This video is from my recent day of nature photography at Merritt Island, near Titusville, Florida. Just off Hwy 3, as it crosses Haulover Canal, there is a viewing station where you can usually see manatees up close. If you are in the area, it is well worth the time. While you are there, there are quite a few wonderful birding roads in the area, including the BioLab Road and the Black Point Nature Drive.

Thanks for this resource. We're reading The Mystery of Pelican Cove by Milly Howard. Without spoiling the ending of the book, let's just say that it is important to know about manatees! :)

My sister and i were in florida, in the ocean, and a manatee swam right underneath her floatie!!!

And also, while were in florida, in the ocean, we saw this weird thing out in the water. It ended up being a dead, giant, turtle!! It was big. But who or what could've killed the turtle??? And why???

I'm so glad to see that, I live in Florida, but alas I never knew it. And I should appreciate the photographer for his awesome job.

Can manatees harm or even kill humans? Also is it illegal to swim with manatees?

rkrampf wrote on Mon, 01/17/2011 - 16:15:

Manatees are harmless to people. They are an endangered species, which makes it illegal to feed, harass or disturb them. They are also susceptible to some human diseases, so you should not touch them.

Thank you for this video. Just a note, we took our children to this very spot years ago. There is a really lovely Nature Center near by and if you take your children along and ask them they have some wonderful educational materials about Manatees that they will give to your children for free. We have had these booklets and coloring sets for seven years, and still browse through them to this day.

Great resource!!

These wonderful mammals are also called sea cows. It is illegal to feed them iin Florida and boating laws are set up to protect them from injury.THANK YOU ALL

Dear Mr. Krampf,
Have you ever been on a whale watching tour? If you have you should post pictures from that! Manatees are very cool animals, they look like sea otters!
