This video is from my recent day of nature photography at Merritt Island, near Titusville, Florida. Just off Hwy 3, as it crosses Haulover Canal, there is a viewing station where you can usually see manatees up close. If you are in the area, it is well worth the time. While you are there, there are quite a few wonderful birding roads in the area, including the BioLab Road and the Black Point Nature Drive.

Manatees are harmless to people.
Manatees are harmless to people. They are an endangered species, which makes it illegal to feed, harass or disturb them. They are also susceptible to some human diseases, so you should not touch them.

Thank you for this video. Just a note, we took our children to this very spot years ago. There is a really lovely Nature Center near by and if you take your children along and ask them they have some wonderful educational materials about Manatees that they will give to your children for free. We have had these booklets and coloring sets for seven years, and still browse through them to this day.

These wonderful mammals are also called sea cows. It is illegal to feed them iin Florida and boating laws are set up to protect them from injury.

Manatees are mammals. They belong to a group called Sirenia, which also includes the Dugong.
