Science Photo of the Day

I photographed this Bison in Yellowstone National Park. Why is he rolling in the dirt?

Good job. Rolling in the dust does help them get rid of pests, but for male Bison, there are other reasons too. The dust wallows are part of the competition for dominance. The more dust they stir up, the higher their rank in the herd. The dust wallows also play a part in attracting a mate. The males urinate on the wallow, and the scent makes them more attractive to female bison.

Morgan from Ms. Webber's Class

I think the bison is rolling in the dirt because he is trying to get dirty to keep the bugs away or trying to impress a girl bison. Maybe he is just trying to cool off.

Me and my class watched the blowing out a candle video and we all thought it was really neat.I have a few questions. What frog is known to live the longest? How do fire flies glow and why do soft shell turtles have such a long neck?

Your admirer,
Morgan from Ms. Webber's class

Hi Morgan

Good job. I'm glad you liked the candle video. The longest life on record for a frog is 40 years, for a European Common Toad. Fireflies produce chemicals to make them glow. When I was your age, a company would pay a penny each for fireflies. They studied them, learned about the chemicals, and invented glow sticks. To see why soft shelled turtles have such long necks, watch the Nature Watching video: http://thehappyscientist.com/science-video/nature-watching

ashlyn's guess

dear Mr. Kramph ,

What are they doing? Are they really rolling in the dirt?
I really think this picture is awesome!
Why does it have two heads?
Or is that just me? Thanks for everything!

your fan ashlyn!

Hi Ashlyn

What looks like two heads are really two feet. His head is on the ground, hidden in the dust. I'm glad you like the photo.
