Scientific names can be very useful. What can this bird's scientific name tell us?

Marvelous job. This is indeed a Northern Mockingbird, whose scientific name is Mimus polyglottos. In Latin, that means "many tongued mimic". They are indeed excellent mimics. Many bird calls are territorial calls, so by imitating the calls of other birds, the Mockingbird is claiming the territory in multiple "languages".

Each call is usually repeated three or four times before changing to the call of a different bird. Some individuals have been known to mimic over 400 songs.

Part of the reason it can do this is because of its syrinx, the bird's equivalent of our vocal cords. In an earlier Science Photo, we learned that the Turkey Vulture does not have a syrinx. Many birds have one pair of syrinx. Parrots have two pair, and Mockingbirds have four pair.

It's scientific name is Mimus

It's scientific name is Mimus Polyglottos which means many-tongued mimic. Usually we found that they come from Latin and Greek. We learned that scientists use these names because every place has a different common name for birds.

hello it's me again and i wanted to know what your favorite video was.

Mockingbird? Hmm, can mimic

Mockingbird? Hmm, can mimic just like a parrot.

What Bird?

Me and my mom looked up this bird at WhatBird.com and found it is a Northern Mockingbird.

It's scientific name is Mimus Polyglottos which means many-tongued mimic. It can mimic from a dog barking to a creaking gate but mostly mimics birds.

:) our state bird! :)

We LOVE our Mockingbirds here in Texas (its our State Bird you know :) I have one that sits atop a tree and sings to us all the time :) They also join together to chase away Hawks that come in our area .... that's an amazing site!

bird's scientific names

We do not recognize that bird. But, Mom made us look up scienfic names and how we get those. Usually we found that they come from Latin and Greek. We learned that scientists use these names because every place has a different common name for birds. Mom says that the sci. name often tells you where a bird is from or what color it is or something unique about the bird.

The only thing we thought was unique about this bird is it's long tail. Mom thought it was very slight too.

Thanks!

Grace and JW in Georgia

Grace thinks this is a Mocking Bird. We are not sure of it's scientific name. Mama thinks it's scientific name as something to do with mimic.

Grace said it copies other birds calls.

JW thinks Grace is correct.

Morgan from Mrs.Webber's Class

Dear Mr. Krampf,

I'm pretty sure it's a mocking bird which copies other things.

How do different planets get their color?

Your Admirer,
Morgan

ventriloquist?

I might be wrong, but here it goes...is this a Northern Mockingbird? (or as we call it here in Puerto Rico - Ruiseñor)? Scientific name Mimus polyglottos, the ability to imitate other bird's songs as well as other sounds.

Gian Toyos

Ooo me!

He can make different noises. He's a mimic.
