Why is this Black Widow Spider partly brown instead of being all shiny black?
Answer:
The brown color is the result of a very large meal. When I first caught this spider, she was all black. After devouring a large mealworm, her abdomen stretched enough to spread the pigment, causing her to look brown instead of black. Once she digests the meal, she will go back to her normal color.
