Onion Crystals

Things to explore:

  • Try looking at samples from different layers in the onion. Does the outer layer have a different concentration of calcium oxalate crystals from the layers underneath it? Can you think of a reason for this?
  • Try looking for calcium oxalate crystals in rhubarb leaves, spinach leaves, bud scales, and other plant parts. Do you think older leaves would be more likely to have more crystals?
