Like many lizards, this lizard lost part of its tail, and is regrowing it. Unlike other lizards, the loss of its tail was a major problem that he was lucky to survive. Why is the loss of its tail so important for this lizard?

Answer:

Many kinds of lizards can lose their tail and then regrow it. It is an adaptation to help them escape from predators. But this lizard is a Six Lined Racerunner. They depend on speed for catching prey and avoiding predators. When they run, they mostly use their back legs, often raising their front legs off the ground, running on their back legs. To accomplish that, they have to balance the weight of their body with the weight of their tail. If their tail is missing, they can't balance when they run, which can cause them to trip, fall, and even do back flips, which is a bad thing if you are trying to escape a predator.
