Why do so many of this bird's chicks not make it to adulthood?

Answer:

This is an Osprey. They usually lay three eggs, but unlike most birds, the mother begins incubating the eggs when she lays the first. That means that one egg will hatch at least a day before the next. That chick will be larger and stronger than the others. If food is plentiful, all of the chicks will survive, but if food is sparse, the older, larger chick will get the most. The next oldest gets what is left, and the youngest only gets food if the others are full. For that reason, the youngest chick often starves.
