OK, this one is more English than Science. What famous poet wrote a poem about this bird?

Answer:

Actually, there have been quite a few poets that have written Pelican poems, probably because of its interesting appearance, and associations with the sea.

A quick Google search for "pelican poem" turned up poems by Edward Lear, Mary Hannay Foott , Joyce (j.d.) Daniels, Meigs, Mildred Plew, and many, many more. Katherine, this one is my favorite too.

A wonderful bird is a pelican,
His bill will hold more than his belican.
He can take in his beak
Food enough for a week;
But I’m damned if I see how the helican.”

Often attributed to Ogden Nash, but was actually written around 1910 by Dixon Lanire Merritt, editor of Nashville’s paper The Tennessean. I have seen many different versions of this, especially the 3rd and 4th lines.
