While rays and skates look similar, there are several things that are usually different. Rays tend to be bigger, and many rays have spines on their tails, but the main, consistent difference is that rays give live birth, while skates lay eggs. Skate egg cases, sometimes called Mermaid's Purses, are black, and somewhat square, with curled horns at each corner.
