This ordinary-looking weed can be a real treasure when you are hiking. What is it, and why is it so wonderful?

Answer:

This is Jewelweed, which is also known as Wild Touch-me-not. The name Jewelweed comes from it leaves, which are water repellant, causing rain and dew to bead up and sparkle like jewels in the morning sun. The name Touch-me-not comes from the seed pods which burst at the slightest touch, throwing seeds in all directions.

It is edible, and quite tasty, but its most endearing quality is that it is a cure for poison ivy. It grows in the same habitat as poison ivy, and the leaves can be crushed and rubbed on exposed skin. It also works after the rash has developed, either by rubbing the crushed leaves on it, or by boiling the leaves. This causes the water to turn bright orange, and when cooled, you wash the rash with the orange water. This usually causes the rash to dry up and go away within a day or two.
