Adding Salt...

After showing this trick to my 6 year old, he asked if I could change it back. I wasn't sure I could, but we thought using salt would draw out some of the water via osmosis. After adding salt to it, we noticed it almost "melting" into little puddles. I'm glad he asked that question as I may never have tried to "reverse" the process myself. Curiosity is awesome. Thank you for all the videos you make, they've really helped me with homeschooling my son.

can you find it in...

can you find the sodium polyacrylate in any thing else besides diapers???

yes!

You can purchase the crystal form of sodium polyacrylate from garden centers. It's found in potting soil (with moisture lock) laundry detergent and even hair gel!

cool

cool I love this experiment is that the same stuff found in that istant snow stuff?

Yes, it is the same chemical.

Yes, it is the same chemical. Great observation.

It worked!!

I'm 11 years old and I just tried this experiment. It took a really long time to get the chemical stuff out, and I could only get a little bit of it, but I tricked my sister and it really worked!! The only problem was that it got all over the table and floor.
I love your videos, I watched 50 of them today! :)

I'm glad you like the video,

I'm glad you like the video, and even more glad that you tried it yourself. That is the really fun part. Thanks for the kind words about my videos. I have fun making them, and am glad when others like them too.

Disappering water

Wow I always thought that magicians did that with magic cool!

big mess!

I had a lot of fun with this experiment, but as the gel fell apart I noticed that it was similar to the "snow" you can buy in a hobby store. I then gave it to my baby sister to play with BIG MISTAKE! MESS! ALL OVER THE PLACE! every one was slipping and i had to clean it all up(I even had to vacuum my legs!)
I love this experiment but if you do this you should do it on a area that has old newspaper covering it(and no little siblings around!)

I had a lot of fun with this. I hope everybody else doesn't have as big as a mess as me!

Evan
P.S.a vacuum works great if you have a big mess or not :)
P.P.S. vacuum.... odd word!

Temperature

Does the temperature of the water or the temperature of the room speed up or slow down the reaction?

so simple

that is really cool our science teacher showed us that last year
