Laser Projection Microscope

Turn a $5 laser pointer into a projection microscope! This is one of the coolest demos that I have come across in a long time!

How does it do that?

How does it do that? I mean, how does it see all that stuff? Does the loop have anything to do with it? Please don't email me, just send a reply on here.

The drop of water acts as a lens to project the image.

WHy it might work.

the loop holds the water and the water us transparent so light went through it but it still showed all the other parts are darker and made the shadow of the imagw

Sweetness!!!

This is AWESOME!!!!!! I learn so much from you! I actually like Science now!!

Cool!

My Mom wants a microscope but they're so expensive we will have to try this one.

cool!

wow that is so cool!!

What kind of water did use? Thanks!

I used some water that had been sitting in an old flower pot for several days. It had dead leaves and some dirt in it, so I was fairly sure that it would have microbes too.

Water

Although I don't have that, I do have a swamp near my house. I think microbes should be in swamp water.

cool!!!

that is really cool!!!

WOWOW

RE: WOW!

You want the loop to be as round as possible, so I had the best results with a picture hanger, one of the strips of metal with a saw toothed edge that you attach to the back of a picture to hang it on the wall. It was thin enough to bend easily, and the predrilled hole was just the right size.

With that said, I also experimented with larger loops, to look at larger things. I could get a drop of water to stay in up to a 1/4 inch loop, if it kept it very still. This lets you look at mosquito larvae, nematodes, etc.

WOW

This is really cool. I can't wait to try it with my students. Just got 3 green laser pointers and in the process of making the loops and getting water from the Wekiva River. Any tips on what material makes the best loops?

Thanks,

Mr. Spoon
