My 8 year old son LOVES science and wants to do a project on mirages. This video is the perfect explanation of what a mirage is! Thank you for posting. Any suggestions on a mirage science project?

Do you know if mirage can happen on snow covered surface?
This winter i was xc-skiing on a flat surface covered in snow and i saw something that looked just like the mirage you described.
I was really amazed because I thought it only happened on a surface that can get much hotter than the air around.
It was a beautiful sunny day and maybe around -5°C and no wind at all.
Yes, it can happen on snow, especially if the air is very cold. The sun heats the snow, which heats the air near the ground. That forms the temperature difference, just as it does in the desert. The air near the ground does not have to be hot, just warmer than the air above it. I would love to actually see a snow mirage. Bet it was amazing.

Haha, the ending cracks me up! Such a good idea, I totally agree. Well done Bob. I watched this as the movers got everything out of my house and into my new one...but they couldn't take my computer! What would I do without internet?!

How does a mirage allow a relection on the refraction? I noticed it when you where driving and the oncoming car appeared to be reflecting of the mirage on the road surface.
Sunlight hits the oncoming car and is reflected towards the road. Instead of hitting the road and being absorbed, the light is refracted (bent) upwards towards your eye, or in this case, the camera, so that you see what looks like a mirror image reflection. The difference is that the light is not hitting something and bouncing back. Instead, it is bending to let you see light which would normally be hitting the road.
:)
Well, you are now.
