At the grocery store. Ammonia is sold with cleaning supplies. Turmeric is sold in the spice section. Isoproply alcohol should be in the section where they sell bandages, beside the hydrogen peroxide.

ammonia strength
We tried this experiment, but the gas of the ammonia turned our entire pumpkin burnt orange instead of red. We did not even get to touch the Tumeric pumpkin with the knife. Does the type of ammonia have an impact on this result? I have Janitorial strength. We will try it with the baking soda and water b/c the ammonia was tough on our eyes and noses.

Could you substitute the amonia with something else? It is really hard on this side of the pond to buy ammonia and I can't find it anywhere in our town.
Thanks!
Substitute for ammonia
Yes, you can use other alkaline solutions. You might try baking soda in water. Window cleaner often has some ammonia in it. Don't use the really strong stuff, like drain cleaner, as it can cause nasty burns.

Haunted Pumpkin
My KLS 5th grade students will love the bloody, haunted pumpkin video. Since we have a NO WEAPONS policy throughout my school district, when we repeat your demonstration, I will substitute a wide putty knife which will achieve a similar effect when we cut the pumpkin on the paper.
I am thrilled that my school district recently purchased a subscription for "The Happy Scientist" for all of our staff members. You are an incredible resource! I hope that you will please visit Key Largo School if you ever go on location in the Keys for a future video. Thanks!
Anne Dunn, KLS 5th Grade Science Teacher
