Sorting Salt and Pepper

Can you mix salt and pepper and then sort them out again? Of course you can!

sorting salt and pepper

We figured out two methods. (1) The first one is similar to what other people did. We put salt and pepper in water and make the salt dissolve. We pour this into a coffee filter so that we can extract pepper. We then boiled this water to make water evaporate so that only salt remains. (2) We also put salt and pepper mixes to liquid soap. After 5 min. or so we found pepper on the top and salt sank on the bottom. We don't know how to extract salt or pepper from liquid soap but at least we were able to separate them. This also works for another high viscous fluid like honey; though, it takes a lot longer. This was a very fun experiment. Thank you! We hope to figure out other ways to separate salt and pepper.

This is a little more involved, but if you put both the salt and pepper in warm water the salt will disolve, but the pepper won't. Skim the pepper off, wait for the h2o to evaporate, leaving the salt behind. The only trouble may be a small amount of NaCl may be attached to the grains of pepper.
I love your experiments, they are so cool, great scientific applications, and they can be accomplished with everyday materials.
Thank you

We poured the salt and pepper in a small glass of water. The heavier salt sunk and the pepper floated!
