Answer:
This is a tooth plate from a stingray. The grooved side would be in the gums, and the flat side is the chewing surface. The ray has quite a few of these, with the "V" of one fitting into the "V" of the next. This forms a large, crushing surface on both the top and bottom of the mouth. I am used to seeing these in fossil beds, where they are usually black. It was a treat to find a recent specimen to compare with the fossils.
