Another photo from Sequoia National Park. Is it true that if you are lost in the woods, you can find your way because moss grows on the north side of the trees?

Answer:

Moss grows best when it is not in full sunlight. The shady side of a tree will have more moss than the sides that get lots of light. In the northern hemisphere, the north side of a tree tends to get less light, but that can vary depending on circumstance. For example, if there is a clearing in the forest, the side of each tree that is away from the clearing will be more shaded, and will have more moss. Moss is not a good way to determine directions.
