Is this bird a hawk or a buzzard?

Answer:

It all depends on where you are from. In Europe, birds of the genus Buteo are called buzzards, while in the United States, we call members of that genus hawks. That is one of the reasons that scientists use those long, complicated, scientific names. That way, if someone says that they saw a Buteo lineatus, everyone knows what it is, whether they call it a Red Shouldered Hawk or a Red Shouldered Buzzard.

This particular Buteo lineatus is the Florida subspecies, which has very different coloring from other members of the species.
