This bird was once called a Green-Backed Heron. Now it is called a Green Heron. Why did its name change?

This bird was considered to be the same species as the Striated Heron and the Lava Heron. All three were classified as Green-Backed Herons (Butorides striata ). Continued research has now separated them into the three different species.
