Scientists have discovered that tarantula venom stimulates the same nerve receptors as hot peppers. Nerve receptors work like locks and keys. If a molecule "key" fits into the receptor "lock", than that sensation is triggered in the nerve. Tarantula venom and hot peppers both have molecular "keys" that trigger the same receptor "lock", causing an intense burning sensation.
