Tiny, scale-like objects
Another microscopic photo. These tiny structures define an entire group of organisms, even giving them their name. What are they from?

Answer:

These are the scales from the wings of a moth. Moths and butterflies both have wings and bodies that are covered with scales. The scales give them them their color, are thought to make them more aerodynamic, and help keep them from getting caught in spider webs. The scales stick to the web, while the butterfly flies away. Moths and butterflies belong to Lepidoptera, an order of insects. Lepidoptera comes from Ancient Greek, and means scaled wings.
