Honey bees use nectar from flowers to produce honey. Why do they collect pollen?

Answer:

While nectar supplies energy, the bees also need the proteins found in pollen. This is especially true for larval bees, which need lots of protein as they grow. Pollen is also used to produce royal jelly, which drones and worker bees eat when they are larvae, but queens eat all their life. An average hive of bees can collect more than 60 pounds of pollen each year.
