Why are icicles so clear, while ice cubes and lake ice are cloudy?

Answer:

Water contains dissolved gases. As the water freezes, those dissolved gases are released. Ice cubes and lake ice freeze from the top down, and from the sides towards the center. That means that with an ice cube, the edges will be fairly clear, but the center will be cloudy with tiny gas bubbles. For icicles, the water flows over the outside and freezes in thin layers that build up over time. The freezing water is always on the outer surface, so any gases are released into the air, instead of being trapped in the ice.
