When in danger, the fawn's heart rate drops tremendously, and it stops breathing. It can maintain this "almost coma" state for quite a while. The very slow heartbeat lets them go much longer without breathing. Breathing causes motion, makes sound and carries scent, so by not breathing, the fawn is harder to detect.
