This is a Kangaroo Rat. (Yes, I know its stuffed, but I have not been lucky enough to photograph a live one yet.) What is strange about their drinking habits?
Answer:
Kangaroo Rats never drink water. During the process of photosynthesis, plants combine carbon dioxide, water, and the energy from the sun to produce substances like sugars and starches. When an animal eats those sugars and starches, It gets the energy, with carbon dioxide and water as byproducts. Most animals need additional water, but Kangaroo Rats are very efficient, and live their entire life without drinking any water. In fact, drinking water can overload their kidneys and kill them.
