The way this tree trunk burned can tell us something about the tree before it was burned. What can it tell us?
Answer:
I became interested in "reading" burned trees when I visited Yellowstone after the big fires of 1988. The checked or "alligator" pattern tells us that the tree was dead and dry before the fire. The unburned side tells us that it was not an intense fire. It may have been burned during a prescribed burn, or it may be left over from someone's campfire.
