The device is a step down transformer, converting the high voltage electricity from the wires into low voltage power for our homes. Because the high voltage feeds in from the lines, occasionally a squirrel will touch both wires, producing a loud bang, a loss of electrical power, and little bits of fried squirrel to come floating down to the ground.
