Answer:
It is a Creosote Bush. For many years, scientists thought that its roots secreted some toxin which would prevent other plants from growing nearby, but after years of looking, they never found any toxins. Further research finally showed that the roots of the Creosote Bush are so efficient at absorbing water that other plants cannot get enough water to grown near them.
