This pattern was made by an Ips Beetle, sometimes called an Engraver Beetle. They bore into trees, and make elaborate tunnels by eating their way through the nutritious layer just under the bark. They then lay their eggs in the tunnels. Unlike many other bark boring beetles, Ips Beetles are rarely fatal to the trees.
