This tiny creature is quite common in many parts of the world. Sometimes you will see one that is white on one end, and dark on the other. What does that mean?

Answer:

This is a Pill Bug, also known as a Roly Poly, a Woodlouse, and many other names. It is an isopod, a group of creatures that is largely aquatic. Pill Bugs are one of the few terrestrial isopods.
Like other arthropods, isopods have to shed their external shells as they grow. Unlike other arthropods, Pill Bugs shed their shells one half at a time. They will shed half a shell, and then when that hardens, they shed the other half. This way, they are never totally helpless.
