Why are some kinds of Bracket Fungus called Artist's Fungus?
Answer:
As with many mushrooms, Artist's Fungus changes colors when it is cut or bruised. The underside is an off white color, but changes to a reddish brown when cut. The fungus is also very tough and wood-like, so once a drawing has been etched into the fungus, it will last for a very long time.
