Mud cracks are usually rough, and often form a somewhat hexagonal pattern. What caused the pattern of these mud cracks? The red object is a drinking straw, to give you an idea of the scale of the photo.
Answer:
I took this photo while the weather was getting cold. This mud was freezing at the same time that it was drying out. As the mud dried, it shrank, building up pressure. When the partially frozen mud finally cracked, it broke much more like ice than like mud.
