This is a photo from our trip to North Georgia. What is the dark, red sand in this stream made of?
Answer:
These are garnets. Many of the rocks in this part of the Tallulah River contain garnets. As they are eroded by the stream, the harder garnets are left behind, so you find beautiful patches of garnet sand, which Nancy loves to look through. Under a magnifying glass or microscope, they are incredible.
