This is not a Mimosa, even though most people call it a Mimosa. Why not?

This tree is a marvelous example of why scientists rely on long, taxonomic names instead of common names. Many people use the common name Mimosa for this tree, but while both this tree, Albizia julibrissin (also known as the Persian Silk Tree) and true Mimosas are in the same family, along with beans, peas, and kudzu, this tree is only distantly related to the true Mimosas. The flower structure of the true Mimosa is very different from the flowers of this tree.
