baby Moorhen
What does it mean if a bird is precocial?

Answer:

This is a newly hatched Common Moorhen. Ground dwelling birds tend to be precocial. They incubate their eggs longer, so the youngl are fairly mature when they hatch, usually ready to venture out of the nest within hours, if not immediately. This is important on the ground where predators are plentiful. Altricial birds are the opposite of precocial, generally nesting in trees or high places. Their eggs hatch much faster, allowing the egg to be smaller, since it does not have to store as much food. The young are born very immature, often with no feathers, and all bur helpless.
