Most birds have strong muscles for closing their beak, but relatively weak muscles for opening it. The European Starling has very strong muscles for opening its beak. By sticking its beak into the ground, tree bark, etc., and forcing the beak open, it pries them apart, letting the bird get at insects and seeds inside.
