Why are blue-eyed snakes like this one more likely to bite?
Answer:
This water snake is almost ready to shed its skin. Instead of eyelids, snakes have a scale that covers each eye to protect it. As they prepare to shed, the scales separate slightly from the new scale underneath, causing the eyes to cloud. During this time, the snake has very limited vision, and is more likely to bite out of fear. This is true for "pet" snakes as well as snakes in the wild.
