How is this bird similar to a flamingo?
Answer:
This is a Western Tanager that has been visiting our garden. Like a flamingo, the red color of its feathers is produced by a class of pigments called carotenoids. Carotenoids are produced by plants, and birds get them either by eating the plants, or by eating animals that eat the plants. If a Western Tanager does not get the proper diet, it will not develop the distinctive red head.
