We put out a salt block to help attract mule deer to our Crittercam. Why does salt attract deer and other animals?

Answer:

One reason that deer and other animals are attracted to salt is that sodium is a necessary part of their diet, helping to regulate several processes in cells. They also need calcium, phosphorus, selenium, and other trace elements for bone growth, growth of antlers, and general good health. In many areas, deer will eat dirt or clay to get these elements. They also get them from some of the plants that they eat.

The other reason that deer are attracted to salt is that just like people, they like the taste. Deer will lick a salt block even if they don't really need the salt, just as we chow down on a bag of salty potato chips.
