Since moving to Utah, we have seen quite a few of these strangely shaped, round clouds. What are they, and how do they form?
Answer:
This is a lenticular cloud. It gets its name because it is shaped somewhat like a lens. They form where air is forced suddenly upwards by hitting a mountain, cliff, or other obstacle. Because of the way they form, they tend to stay in one place, even when the clouds around them are moving. This, plus their shape often causes people to think they are flying saucers.
