Last night we got a call from our friends Paula and Eldon, asking if I wanted a centipede. Of course, I said "YES!" It is now getting used to its new home, with a handful of mealworms to munch on. Different species of centipede have different numbers of legs, but whether they have 20 pairs or 200 pairs, they all follow one strange pattern. What is it?

Answer:

While the number of legs varies from one species to the next, centipedes always have an even number of pairs of legs. You could have a centipede with 30 pairs (60 legs), but not with 31 pairs (62 legs) or 29 pairs (58 legs).
