Our dog, Junie Moon, found this amazing creature on our walk after a hard rain. What is it?
Answer:
This is a Two Toed Amphiuma. It is one of the largest salamanders in the Southeastern US, growing up to 39 inches long. They have four tiny legs, with two toes on each. They may not be land sharks, but they do have a mouth full of razor sharp teeth. They eat fish, frogs, lizards, snakes, and just about anything else that they can catch. They can also deliver a very painful bite to people, which is why I was very careful in handling it.The neatest thing about this one is that it whistled when I caught it. The Two Toed Amphiuma is one of the few salamanders that make vocal sounds.
