What unmoth-like characteristics does this moth have?

Answer:

This is Hemaris thysbe, also known as the Common Clearwing or Hummingbird Clearwing. They get their name because the mimic hummingbirds, and because of the spots on their wings that are transparent, due to the lack of scales. The wings are fully covered with scales when they emerge from their pupa. Patches of the scales are very loosely attached, and fall away on the moth's first flight.

They have several unmoth-like characteristics.
1. They are active during the day, instead of at night.
2. During metamorphosis, they do not spin a silk cocoon. Instead, they form a hard pupa, much more like a butterfly.
3. They do not have a tympana, the structure that most moths use for hearing.
4. They hover while feeding, instead of landing on flowers to get their sip of nectar.
