Smoke is made up of tiny, solid particles. Those particles are suspended in hot air (gas), which is rising from the fire, so smoke is a mixture of solids and gases. Different kinds of smoke are made of different particles. This is one of the wild fires near the Okefenokee Swamp, and the smoke is mostly made of tiny clumps of unburned carbon.
